Azotobacter
Azotobacter Water Soluble is a water-soluble that holds immense significance in sustainable agriculture. It is a beneficial bacterium that plays a crucial role in fixing atmospheric nitrogen into a form that can be readily absorbed by plants, thus promoting plant growth and enhancing soil fertility.
This bio-fertilizer is derived from the Azotobacter genus of free-living, nitrogen-fixing bacteria. When applied to the soil or plant surfaces, Azotobacter colonizes the rhizosphere (root zone) and establishes a symbiotic relationship with the plant. The bacterium possesses the enzyme nitrogenase, which facilitates the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3) through the process of nitrogen fixation.
The ammonia produced by Azotobacter can be taken up by plants in the form of ammonium ions (NH4+). This enhances the plant’s nitrogen uptake, which is crucial for various biological processes, including chlorophyll synthesis, protein formation, and overall plant growth. As a result, plants supplied with Azotobacter as a bio-fertilizer often exhibit improved vegetative growth, increased root development, and enhanced resistance to environmental stresses.
Mechanism of Action
- Azotobacter powder when applied through drip irrgation fixes atmospheric nitrogen in soil about 15 to 30 kg per hectare. It also produces antifungal substances which inhibits the growth of harmful fungi and result in lowering the disease occurrences.
